Remembering our heroes;
It was the month of November in 2008. An eerie silence had descended on the Taj. The terrorists from Pakistan were holding women and children hostage on the third floor. A group of 10 commandos of the 51st Special Action Group of the NSG was searching for them. Foremost on the mind was the safety of women and children.
They climbed to the sixth floor and took the staircase to reach the third floor. The room was locked from the inside. Heading the mission was Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a young army officer. Time was running out and the team decided to break open the door.
As the door fell apart, the terrorists fired a volley of bullets at the commandos. Major Unnikrishnan & his colleague commando Yadav, engaged the terrorists in a firefight. The sound of gunfire echoed throughout the Taj. The outnumbered terrorists ran to another floor. But Sandeep and his men were not going to let them escape and pursued them.
In the exchange of fire, Commando Sunil Yadav was injured. Major Unnikrishnan even while engaging the terrorists, arranged for Yadav’s evacuation. Hot on their trail, Major Unnikrishnan wanted to finish the job and chased the perpetrators to another floor of the hotel. In the encounter that followed, he was shot in the back and succumbed to his injuries.
His last words, according to NSG officials were, “Do not come up, I will handle them”. His exceptional courage and leadership motivated his comrades to eliminate all the terrorists and complete the assigned mission successfully.
The hero of ‘Operation Black Tornado’ will be remembered forever.
