A few years ago, I was traveling from Bhopal to Bangalore and had to go via Indore. I had only a few hours and decided to check out the eateries. To my surprise, the streets were spick and span. It was not the main roads but the small lanes didn’t lag behind either.
Indore secured the top position amongst the 'cleanest cities' of India for the seventh consecutive time. The laurels clearly rest with the Indore Municipal Corporation for doing the unthinkable.
The city's effective, sustainable, and durable waste management system played a big role in Indore’s transformation. The Indore story is unparalleled in history and has caught the attention of national and international media. While heaping praises is one part of the story, the time has come to extend this concept to other cities as well as a part of the Swatch Bharat program.
The solution:
Cutting across political affiliations, the center must ensure that teams from Indore Municipal Corporation 'transfer technology' by sending them to other cities on deputation to replicate the processes. Needless to say, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai are nowhere near the benchmark set by Indore. Once we are done with the big cities, then the tier 2 cities would be the target.
Skeptics might argue that this won’t hold true for populous cities. Let me reiterate that this has nothing to do with the population of the city. Strict laws and a no-nonsense approach with hefty fines will ensure the desired result.
People’s involvement is the key and once you have their buy-in, rest assured that India will be one of the cleanest nations this side of Asia.
