In 1904 , a young couple Sharada Prasad Srivastava and Ramdulari Devi living in Mughalsarai in Uttar Pradesh, were blessed with a son. The boy would often go to the Ganges along with his parents. One day the son got separated on the banks of the river and the child was picked up by a cowherd. An FIR was filed and the boy was traced. The cowherd reluctantly returned the boy who was reunited with his mother.
The boy grew up and went to school. As he did not have enough money to take the ferry and reach his school which was on the other side, he would tie his books on his head and swim the course twice a day. As years rolled by, the boy grew to be a young man of marriageable age. No cars or costly gifts in those days, all he asked was a khadi cloth and a spinning wheel as dowry.
Deeply influenced by Swami Vivekananda, he rose to become India’s PM in 1964. In 1965 , When Pakistan attacked India , he appealed for contributions and womenfolk parted with their jewels and magalsutra to raise money for our brave soldiers. He was a leader who moved the nation like none else.
Yes, He was Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Cut to the present, a generation which has all the luxuries of life , where children are upset with their parents for giving them a 25K smartphone instead of the 45K high end;
Time to go back in time and look at how challenging life was in those times and take a leaf out of it.
