Two monks were crossing a river when they saw a scorpion drowning. Taught to be compassionate, one of them picked it up and threw it on the wet mud . Undeterred by the venomous sting, he lifted the scorpion a 2nd time and put it on dry ground, only to be bitten again.

“Why do you continue to save the scorpion when you know its nature is to sting”, asked the 1st monk.

The monk replied, “because to save it is in my nature.”

In life , we come across people who either listen to you or criticize you. You can cannot change your nature to please everybody you meet. Then you will be no different from a chameleon. With a shifting persona , your individuality takes a beating.

Is it really worth losing your peace of mind for something you can’t change? Perhaps it’s the nature of the person to be critical and cynical. By clinging to your nature of compassion, not only will you continue to reap the benefits of your own mental peace, but you may even bring a small transformation in the nature of the person bothering you, however less likely it may seem.

Just be yourself.
