From Terror to Tribute: Caesar the Heroic Police Dog of Mumbai

The year was 2008 and it was just another Wednesday for Mumbaikars. Officer goers had returned home and switched on their TV sets. Then the horror unfolded. Pakistani terrorists onboard a hijacked trawler entered South Bombay. As they disembarked, their roving eyes fell on the iconic Taj. They moved into the hotel and opened fire on the guests. Right from the swimming pool to the bars and restaurants, no place was spared. The carnage left 31 dead.

Helping the police in the difficult hour was Caesar, the police dog. He was posted at the Taj Mahal. Caesar was inducted into the police force when he was barely three months old. He was trained in Pune for six months after which, he joined the bomb detection and disposal squad BDDS. While discharging his duties on that fateful day, Caesar sniffed out 8 kg of RDX from the hotel area and saved many lives.

Caesar was always in the thick of the action and played a significant role by helping the police during the serial bomb blasts in Zaveri Bazaar in 2006. Besides the Taj, Caesar detected RDX in CST and Nariman House too. He served the nation for 12 long years before retiring from service.

It was Thursday morning and a pall of gloom had descended on the retirement animal care at Virar. Caesar breathed his last and left the world for a better place. He was brought to the Animal Hospital, Parel in an ambulance and was cremated.

His handlers from the Bomb, Detection and Disposal Squad (Goregaon police) were present during the funeral. The National Flag was draped over Caesar and his former colleagues bid him a tearful farewell.

Caesar's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

From up there in the heavens, Caesar is still watching the Mumbai police and successive generations of canines straining every nerve to ensure the safety of Bombay.

It happens only in Bharat where there is no distinction between humans and animals; especially those who laid down their lives protecting the nation.

Wherever you are Caesar, you are still my best friend.
