In the epic Ramayana, the character of Hanuman makes interesting reading. It is a foregone conclusion that without Hanuman’s help, Rama wouldn’t have found Sita who was held prisoner in far away Lanka. Son of Vayu, the wind god, the boy Hanuman is born with superpowers and is simply unstoppable. The juvenile is so full of energy that he plays pranks & annoys people.
One day, the boy chances upon a group of sages deeply immersed in their sacrificial ceremonies. Unaware of the sacred offerings to Agni, the god of fire, Hanuman disrupts the proceedings. Angered by Hanuman’s antics, the sages eventually curse him. As a result, he forgets his superpowers which would only come alive till reminded by someone else.
Time moves on. Hanuman meets Rama and offers assistance to locate Sita. But who will go cross the ocean and go to Lanka? As they stand before the sea, Jambuvan the bear king reminds Hanuman of his powers, effectively ending the sages’ curse. The spell is broken. Hanuman takes to the skies and reaches Lanka.
Every one of us has a skill, a trait that is deeply ingrained at birth. As years roll by, we forget these qualities till someone reminds us of our prowess. Once we are in touch with our own abilities, there is nothing that stops us from reaching for the skies.
