In the Sanatana Dhrama, Yagna, or offering oblations to the fire is mentioned in the Vedas. Yagna is a part and parcel of Vedic injunctions. As we try to follow the path of Dharma, rituals lead to the cleansing of the mind. The most important karma is Yagna. The Yagna is just not offering oblations to Agni the God of fire, but to the other Devas as well like Indra (the Lord of heavens), Varuna (rain), and Vayu ( wind). The concept of Yagna is unique to the Sanatana Dharma and not found anywhere else.

Yagna requires many substances like ghee, grains, wood, and butter to be consigned to the flames even as the priests chant the mantras. This offering is called the ‘Homa’. As the relevant mantras are chanted, what is meant for Agni goes to him while the rest of the offerings are for the other divinities like the Rudra, Vishnu, Indra, Varuna, and Yayu.

For those who perform these rituals in their homes or elsewhere, many would like to know more about the benefits of the rituals.

The advantages are threefold:

1. One is to ensure the well-being of ourselves and those around us through the grace of the Devas whilst we living in this world.

2. To live happily after death in the world of the Devas as per our Punya.

3. Performing the Yagna without desiring any results or rewards.

The importance of Yagna has been highlighted in the Bhagavad Gita too;

One should perform Yagna as one’s duty without the desire for gain for oneself. This in turn leads us to the path of knowledge whose final destination is Moksha or release from the eternal cycle of birth and death.

In short, we merge with the infinite.

As we continue to perform the yagnas, they will give you plenty in return like the Kamadhenu.
